Wait… What Is Whipped Coffee?

Affectionately known as tiktok coffee, whipped coffee is really a mix of equal parts of instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. Although tiktok has brought this fancy drink into the limelight, its been around for a long time and has a number of fancy names.

In Korea, “whipped coffee” is known as Dalgona coffee. In Greek, it is a frappe, and in India it is simply known as beaten coffee. Whatever you call it, this delicious recipe is clearly a time-honored tradition and worth trying out.

How to Make Whipped Coffee with Instant Coffee

You can see imhanacho’s video right here. According to cocoandash.com, this drink is made using equal parts of instant coffee, sugar, and hot water and then whipped until it gets light and fluffy. This can be done with a hand whisk, but it takes a lot of effort. You might want to use an electric mixer instead.

After you’ve whipped this concoction up, fill a glass part way with milk and ice, and then stir in your whipped coffee mix. This simple recipe is delicious and satisfying. But not everyone keeps instant coffee on hand. To make “whipped coffee” without the instant coffee mix, there are simple substitutions that will do the trick.

How to Make Instant Coffee Substitute with Coffee Beans

Chocolate Covered Katie, of chocolatecoveredkatie.com, explains that you can make a sort of instant coffee with your own coffee beans. She says to pour some of your coffee beans into a coffee grinder and then grind them until the grounds are as fine as possible. Once you have finlely ground coffee, pour the grinds through a sieve. The powdery textured coffee that falls through the sieve will work just like instant coffee. You can save whatever remains in the sieve to make regularly brewed coffee, if you like. Simply proceed with the recipe as normal.

Fresh Brewed Espresso

Another potential alternative to using instant coffee in your whipped coffee drink is to use some fresh brewed espresso. Grind your beans and make your espresso like you normally would. Then, carefully whip 2 tablespoons of very hot espresso with 1 tablespoon of sugar. This should give you the same result because the sugar will help the espresso become light and fluffy.

Variations on Whipped Coffee

How about the cocoa and matcha varieties?

If you don’t want to use regular sugar in your whipped coffee, you can use a sugar substitute such as coconut sugar, granulated erythritol, or even brown sugar.

If you would prefer to avoid using regular milk in your whipped coffee, simply swap out the milk for any milk substitute such as almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, or even soy milk.

If you don’t want caffeine, decaf instant coffee works just as well as the high-test, caffeinated variety.

Coffee alternatives

If you don’t want to use ground coffee beans, instant coffee, or brewed espresso for your drink, other powdered options work just as well. Instead of instant coffee, try cocoa powder or matcha powder for a variety on the theme.

Did you know there are other possible uses for your whipped coffee? It makes decadent dressing or ingredient in desserts. Dab a few spoon fulls on ice cream or brownies instead of whipped cream. Cookies and milk? How about dipping your favourite cookie into whipped coffee? Might be the next best thing you ever try….
